ROB WALBERS

Rob Walbers is a Belgian photographer based in Tokyo, Japan. Shortly after turning 30, he left his home country to move to Japan—a decision that expanded both his visual language and creative direction. While he began his career in music photography, his work has since evolved into fashion, editorial, and advertising, all while maintaining a strong focus on long-term personal projects.

Walbers studied photography at the Karel de Grote Hogeschool in Antwerp, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 2004. He started his freelance career in Belgium, working with magazines, music labels, and live venues before relocating to Tokyo in 2010. Over the years, he has photographed internationally renowned artists including Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga, Morrissey, and Radiohead.

With over 20 years of experience, Walbers has built a distinctive visual style characterized by high-contrast, black-and-white portraiture and a refined, narrative-driven approach. His commercial work includes collaborations with global fashion and luxury brands, producing campaigns and editorials for both print and digital platforms. Alongside commissioned work, he continues to pursue independent projects that explore culture, craftsmanship, and human stories.

He is the co-author of Shosa: Meditations in Japanese Handwork, a publication that reflects on the beauty of movement and gesture in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Walbers is also the founder and creative force behind TalesInInk, an independent magazine that merges photography, art, and storytelling, bridging influences between Japan and Europe.

His body of work has resulted in multiple books, exhibitions, and awards, including titles such as NoMa(n)d’sLand, a long-term project documenting nomadic life in Mongolia. Whether working on assignment or personal series, Walbers consistently seeks to create imagery that is both aesthetically striking and deeply human.
